Highlights:
From its beginnings in 1868 as a modest row house turned furniture emporium in the Ladies’ Mile Historic District, this iconic building has continuously evolved, embodying the spirit of adaptability through the ages. The building’s history is rich with notable events, from Anthony Comstock‘s 1897 raid to destroy printing plates deemed “obscene,” to housing the avant-garde photographer Robert Mapplethorpe‘s studio in the 1980s. Today, the building is a luxurious condominium complex with a prominent storefront, marking a new chapter in its storied existence.
The recent transformation of this historic structure was a collaborative effort led by Anbau and CTS Group Architects, with WindowFix playing a pivotal role in the project. This ambitious renovation, spanning the third to fifth floors, was guided by the stringent requirements of the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. To meet these high standards, Parrett Window & Door was chosen as the ideal partner for the complex task of historically replicating the building’s original architectural features.
The renovation began with the intricate installation of a variety of window types, each carefully selected to enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal while preserving the building’s historic charm. The project included the integration of inswing casements, double-hung, and triple-hung windows, all designed to contribute to the building’s overall visual coherence. These windows not only serve a practical purpose but also add to the building’s character, ensuring that its historical essence remains intact.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the Euro inswing casements on the second floor, which provide a subtle modern touch while complementing the building’s traditional architecture. However, the true highlight of the project lies in the custom-designed wood storefront. Crafted from high-quality Sapele mahogany, this storefront is a masterpiece of woodworking, seamlessly incorporating swing doors and fixed windows, including an impressive 10-foot by 12-foot window that commands attention.
This extensive renovation project was no small feat, requiring nearly two years of meticulous planning and execution. Every detail was carefully considered, with the team’s commitment to excellence evident in the final outcome. The project not only met but exceeded expectations, showcasing the perfect blend of historical preservation and modern innovation.
Beyond the physical transformation, this project reflects broader trends in urban development, where adaptability and innovation are key to preserving the integrity of historic structures while meeting contemporary needs. As cities around the world continue to evolve, projects like this highlight the importance of balancing tradition with progress.
As visitors explore the building, they are met with a breathtaking display of architectural ingenuity. The diverse window designs, with their unique shapes and sizes, create a visual narrative that celebrates the harmony of form and function. Meanwhile, the custom wood storefront stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of traditional craftsmanship, offering a tangible connection to the building’s storied past.
Ultimately, this renovation is more than just a building project; it is a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and dedication. It serves as a powerful reminder that true artistry knows no bounds and that the most remarkable transformations are often those that take time to unfold. This building, with its rich history and stunning new features, stands as a symbol of the enduring beauty of both tradition and innovation, a beacon of what is possible when vision and craftsmanship come together.
