The Angel Guardian Home, an iconic structure built in 1899, was originally established as an orphanage by the Sisters of Mercy. This facility, situated in Dyker Heights, served the community for nearly 120 years. It began as a branch of the Sisters of Mercy’s convent in Clinton Hill and continued its mission for many decades.
The Angel Guardian Home’s history is rich and multifaceted. Initially, it functioned as an orphanage and a residence for unwed mothers. This remained its primary role until the 1980s, when its purpose evolved to include senior assisted living services. Throughout its long history, the Home has been a place of care and support for those in need.
Designed by the architect George H. Streeton, the building is a masterpiece that combines Renaissance Revival and Beaux-Arts architectural elements. Its design reflects the grandeur and attention to detail characteristic of these styles. The structure occupies an entire block of 12th Avenue, standing as a testament to the architectural and cultural history of the area.
In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve the historic integrity of the Angel Guardian Home while modernizing its facilities. One significant project involved Windowfix supplying and installing 212 aluminum windows by Universal Windows of Marlborough, MA. These windows are part of the 550 series, known for their historical accuracy and compliance with the standards set by the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places, as well as numerous state and local historic preservation entities.
The 550 series windows are designed with minimal sight lines, combining the structural strength of aluminum with multiple grid profiles. This design authentically reproduces the original look of old window putty lines, whether for wood or steel windows. This attention to detail ensures that the windows maintain the historical aesthetics of the building while adopting to modern functionality.
The installation of these windows was carried out in accordance with landmarks-approved drawings, ensuring that every aspect of the renovation met the stringent requirements of historic preservation. This project highlights the commitment to maintaining the architectural integrity of the Angel Guardian Home while updating it to meet contemporary standards.
The Sisters of Mercy’s dedication to the Angel Guardian Home is evident in the care and attention given to its preservation. The building not only serves as a historical landmark but also continues to be a place of community and service. The renovations and updates made to the structure are a testament to the ongoing commitment to preserving its legacy.
In 2018, a developer purchased the Angel Guardian Home, sparking concern among community members and advocates. Fearing the potential demolition of the historic building to make way for residential homes or other infrastructures, they campaigned vigorously for the building to be landmarked. It was designated an individual landmark in August 2022 by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The efforts culminated in the property being sold in December 2020 to Talmud Torah Imrei Emes D’Chasidei Gur. The new owners plan to transform the former orphanage into a Yeshiva for the Gur Sect, accommodating approximately 600 children from Pre-K through 8th grade.
The Angel Guardian Home stands as a significant piece of history in Dyker Heights. From its beginnings as an orphanage and residence for unwed mothers to coming back around for the benefit of educating children, the Home has continually adapted to meet the needs of the community. The architectural beauty of the building, coupled with the meticulous preservation efforts, ensures that the Angel Guardian Home will remain a cherished landmark for generations to come.
